HISTORY OF SURYAGARH
Jodhpur is known for its colorful history and royal heritage. Jodhpur was an independent state under the British Empire, ruled by the dynasty of Rathores. Most of the rulers, besides possessing administrative abilities, were sportsmen & great sports lovers. The royal game during the period was Horse Polo. It was the game which very few affluent could play, hence most of the players were of royal lineage with strong feudal background. It was sometimes during that period the erstwhile Ruler of Jodhpur, delighted at the performance of the Team, awarded huge colonies to the players around the RED SAND POLO playing ground. During that period, seven identical Havelies (also known as ‘garhs’) were built with mixed European-Rajput-Mughal Style of Architecture of that era.
Suryagarh was one of the seven period Havelies. The literal meaning of GARH is a fort but in this case call it a fortress. The Haveli/Garh belongs to the family of SUN-worshippers and and hence it was named-‘Suryagarh’. Out of those Havelies, ‘Suryagarh’ is the only Haveli of that period to withstand the onslaught of generations, economy & time. Every room in the Haveli has a unique history. The architecture of the Haveli was founded on the need basis of that period. This is a strange building, where the rooms on the ground floor have a normal low ceiling of 12 feet but the rooms on the first floor are 20 feet high. Word has it that these rooms were designed for young horse trotting princes who would ride and leave the horses just outside the main building. Then they would go to their royal suites on the first floor to take rest and get pampered. Suryagarh occupies three floors of a magnificent building that was once a royal retreat. It is very close to Umaid Bhawan Palace, the royal seat of Jodhpur, now one of the most popular tourist attractions of Rajasthan.
A Well Preserved Heritage
Open the gate to the Haveli and you understand immediately what a ‘garh’ or fortress actually means. The main structure of SURYAGARGH has been kept intact with very little changes. Frequent restoration work has been done from time to time with utmost care to preserve the originality of the structure. In its current form the structure looks majestic.The uniqueness of the Haveli has to be virtually seen to imagine what happened during that period. The structure looks majestic. The interiors of the huge suites, measuring length/30 feet, width/20 feet, height/20 feet, have not been tampered at all to give the guests the feel of the royal heritage dating back more than a century. The rooms look absolutely magnificient, done in same old crisp scheme of ivory, dusty red and white.
There is a beautiful sofa in each room and a chaise to curl up with a book. The baths & toilets have not been fundamentally changed but are well equipped to provide modern day amenities. All the furniture in the suites is unique. There is a door that slides open to reveal an entrance to a huge patio that overlooks the lush green garden. Tourists often take time to spend some time here and enjoy the sunny mornings in winter. One place where the cool character is at its best is the huge terrace on the second floor that gives a 360 degree view of Jodhpur city.
All the furniture is accented with beautiful grooves and carvings that hint at the historical past and provide a bold character to the suites. For example, in one of the suites you will find an original European table lamp sitting on a beautiful pedestal. You will also find ancient paintings in another suite. In the picture below notice the ceiling of the room. Not only is the height of the room amazing but the Belgian glass hangings leave many astounded.
